| | | | ...Cafe habana used to be a reliable place to get cuban food in a very NYC-stylized way. There were always handsome people waiting out in front, smoking cigarettes waiting for the table to come up. Open windows let the conversation spill out onto the sidewalks, tempting passers-by to join the fun, sexy, party going on inside. But the last time I ate here, many things were terribly amiss.
The chicken in mole sauce was a bland, re-heated plank of chicken breast with the approximate flavor and texture of cardboard. The mole sauce was as thick as wallpaper paste, with no discerning mole-ness about it. The mojito was on the opposite side of wrong: watered down and thin. At least they managed to save the yummy grilled corn with queso fresco from ruin. The rice and plantain were very average, at best. The plantains were a bit dry; the rice was without any character.
It's too bad this place has gone down. In NYC, there are so many restaurants to try that if one of your old standbys has a bad night, it's hard to accept giving up another night of poor dining to give it a 2nd chance. There might be hope for cafe habana, but in the meantime, be warned: the mighty have fallen. |
